Alright Seattle Oppos, I was hanging out in your craigslist and I won’t lie... that is a weird place. As a routine proof-of-concept and/ or exercise in boredom, I was trolling Seattle CL for cars that I’d like to take on our next cheap car challenge.
For those unfamiliar, my friends and I have a... uhh lets say hobby... where we fly to a place, buy cheap cars, and then drive them on an epic road trip. Past version we’ve done convertibles (and a truck) on the PCH and cheap 4x4s from California to Utah. The next one, in August, we’re doing Seattle to Anchorage.
So, without further faffing around, lets look at cars!
For transparency, my search terms were as follows:
Price: $600 - $3500
Transmission: Manual
Has Images
First find was !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Not much to say about this little truck other than it looks awesome ! A bit of a hike out at Port Angeles, but the classic good looks, manual transmission, awesome color, matching camper shell, and $2200 asking price make it a great candidate.
Plus look at that speedo!
Next up we’ve got a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ! Ok yes... I did sort of buy it’s older brother a few months ago, but I think the 4th gen civics are more handsome than the 3rd gen. (I hope my third gen doesn’t hear me say that!)
To be honest, Seattle Craigslist was lousy with clean looking 90s Hondas. I really like them, but I’m not sure that is what I’d want to buy for the trip. Either way, this one boasts a decent list of recent service and spare parts, a seemingly enthusiastic seller, and a $3,000 asking price.
Honestly this one might be too clean for one of these trips and being located in Olympia would probably be a deal breaker anyway. Either way, you couldn’t ask for a more reliable companion on the long drive.
Speaking of wagons, how about this !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ? Normally the thought of picking up this vintage of VW would scare me, but it only has to last two weeks... right?
With a 6-speed, V6, and trunk space for days, I could see giving this mileage muncher a good sendoff. The seemingly mismatched body panels and squint-o-vision pictures are certainly worrying. But, again, it only has to last two weeks.
Also I didn’t even know you could get these in cloth?
Clearly a dealer listing, at $3000 asking what could possibly go wrong!?
If we’re sliding down the insanity curve, how about this customized !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ?
The Bad Idea Bears called and even they think this would be a poor choice. Clearly customized, including a heater delete, this thing is risk personified.
Still though with a $2500 asking and epic looks, it only has to last two weeks....
Almost done, continuing on the VW trend (there are a lot of them up there!) we have !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Talk about a car I didn’t know was sold in the states!
I don’t have any particular love for these, especially over the Golf, but it is undeniably interesting. The $3,250 asking price is a little over our $3000 budget, but unless the seller “knows what he has” I don’t think shaving off a few hundred would be a big deal.
Lastly, we have the best worst idea: a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . Take a 660cc city car on a 2,500 mile road trip!? Sounds like fun!
I might be insane, but this would be a bridge too far, even for me, but $3200 isn’t a big ask for a cool little car.
There were a lot of others, including some Geo Metros, a Ford Focus, a Subaru Baja, and so on, but I think what I have here are the highlights.
What does oppo think? Are we going to die?

Question: Why not look at CL in Metro Van? You’d probably get a way, way better deal.

1 and half hours from Seattle. I will buy this for you if you drive it to Alaska.

I thought about that a little, but the starting point is in Seattle, so it’d be a hike, and I’d be concerned about trying to take a Canada car back into the US. I’ll take a look, JIC.

Lots of people on both sides of the border shop on the other up here. It’s not too difficult.
Worth a shot

Pacific Northwest?
You have to buy a 1st-gen Legacy Turbo or Volvo 240/740 turbo. As a bonus challenge, whoever makes it home with the fewest amount of leaks or blown gaskets & seals gets bonus points.

I think I just fell in love with that S-10

It is super awesome. I can’t imagine it has led an easy life, but I don’t care.

This is a good hobby. That Squareback is awesome...

It looks pretty good in the picture. I don’t think it’s seen too much banging around in the woods anyways.

S10!!!!!!!!!! I am also biased tho because I had an 87'. Also the 2.8 is super easy to work on. Almost everything is readily accessible under the hood. Hell, i changed my o2 sensor through the fender well. Make sure the 4WD works, it’s vacuum operated. The vacuum motor is super easy to get at. I had to put a ho se clamp on the vacuum hose of mine or else it would come off. Also it being a manual will definitely make that 2.8 feel way more powerful than the automatic.

Dude! That S-10 is amazeballs! I’d buy that in a heartbeat.

I was there at Christ mas time. I was shocked just how many 1960-1990's vehicles there are, in above average condition. I guess being overcast majority of the time really prevents a lot of UV damage to the paint. I think Seattle may be a better place to find classics than California.

The 4th gen civic wagon market is definitely in a downturn in the Seattle area right now (I have a permanent craigslist search for them that I check every day lol ). Usually there are 4 or 5 good ones, occasionally one with rt4wd. I agree that the 4th gens look better, but they don’t have that sweet rear quarter panel glass that the 3rd gen does. Plus 3rd gen 4wds are even rarer.
As far as non-civic wagons go, subarus hold their value stupidly well in the PNW, so probably won’t find much luck with those. That s-10 looks pretty solid for the price. Camrys and corollas are a dime a dozen around here, usually in fairly rough shape, but still driveable, and can be found with manuals. I think you should go for a L exus LS400. Seen a few for within your price range that would last the 2 weeks needed, and would be like driving on a couch for those 2 weeks.

Yeah I sort of agree. Seems like a lot of practical and/or economy cars in generally good shape. For interesting cars I’d say CA is better. When we did the first one in LA I was tripping over old Alfas, MGs, Fiats, and Triumphs but didn’t really run into that on this search.

I’ve thought about giving up my commitment to manuals to see if I could get a lux-o-barge of some ilk, but I also like there are a lot of mechanic tricks you can do to keep a manual going that you can’t do in an auto.

How do I convince my friends that this sort of trip is a good idea? And/or where do I find friends like yours?
Sounds like a great time. The S10 is probably a safe bet, the scirocco is neat for sure. A lot will come down to what’s available at the time when you go to make the trip (unless you’re buying in advance?) though. Still good to get a feel for the market.

At least for me I sent over a 12 page proposal document detailing concept, approximate route, risks and contingencies , etc, and began setting up planning meeting. Of the 10 or so people I invited we ended up with 3 so... I think that worked out.
But yeah, we don’t start cataloging cars in earnest until about 2-3 weeks before the trip. I end up making a big list of everything that is available and rank it based on a bunch of random criteria, then begin contacting sellers a few days before. Here is my list from the first one haha
